Competitions

Children in our school are encouraged to participate in a range of competitions at local, state and national levels. Participation is not compulsory and school-based support is provided wherever possible. Often a small fee for participating children is associated with these competitions.

Academic

Have Sum Fun (Math Association of WA)

The school participates in the annual Have Sum Fun Mathematics Competition which involves teams of students, from years 5 – 7, working together to solve mathematical problems. The competition draws schools from the government, private and independent sectors from as far away as Mandurah. Bunbury Primary School’s performance over a number of years has earned it the recognition of not only being the highest ranked government school in the competition, but also being the team to beat.

Spaghetti Bridge Making Competition

The school participates in the Institute of Engineers' Spaghetti Bridge Making Competition. Over the past few years, our students have received First, Second and Third prize awards in the competition. This competition is co-ordinated by parents in conjunction with the school.

International Competitions & Assessments for Schools (ICAS) – Maths, English & Spelling Competition.

These national competitions are voluntary and allow children to participate in an assessment task that compares their efforts to other children across the nation. Children from years 3 to 7 are able to enter (there is a small fee for each). The assessment is carried out at school and marked by the University of NSW. Children receive information about their performance and a certificate (High Distinction, Distinction, Credit, Participation) based upon where their score fell compared to others.

NAPLAN (National Assessment Programme - Literacy And Numeracy)

Along with all other Australian schools, children in Years 3, 5 & 7 are involved in nation-wide assessments in the areas of Writing, Reading, Spelling, Mathematics and Grammar and Punctuation. Our school has consistently achieved above the benchmark in State, District and Band (similar socioeconomic) school averages.

Cultural

Eisteddfod

Each year students from BPS participate in this highly regarded community event. The students compete in many areas: recorder, instrumental, choral and vocal. Students from this school have achieved a high degree of success over a number of years. The BPS Junior and Senior Choir achievements are always recognized as exceptional. In 2006 both the senior and junior choir was awarded first place. The junior choir also received the Margaret River Perpetual Shield for the best overall junior choir.

Combined Schools' Music Festival

Each year children from our choirs also participate in a combined schools' festival that sees each school performing its own musical item and combining with six other schools (from all three sectors) to perform several songs. This is a non-competitive festival of young talent and showcases individual and group talent. Bunbury Primary School has always performed outstandingly.

Sporting

Sporting Activities

Each year the school conducts a Faction Swimming Carnival in Term 1. Students from Year 4 - 7 participate in the carnival with successful students representing Bunbury Primary School at the District Interschool Swimming Carnival. The school also offers an in-term swimming lesson programme for students in Pre-Primary through to Year 7. The annual Faction Athletics Carnival is held in Term 3. The school has been very competitive at the Interschool Athletics Carnival. This carnival involves a great deal of support from parents and the school community. Students from Years 4 - 7 can also compete in the District Cross–Country Event. Bunbury PS teams and individual students have achieved high results in this event. A Winter Carnival is also held with the opportunity to participate in football, netball and soccer.
